Somehow it turned into a tradition to make a bag before leaving the country. I left the country 3 times this year and the bags got more and more elaborate. The final bag is pictured here, I made it before going to Japan for 2 weeks in August.
I got the fabric from Quilting Adventures
the strap has a loop for keys (but later filled up with those little dangley phone charms from the Japan trip; mameshiba, a capybara from the Kaiyukan, and a few other random things)
inside the bag: multiple pockets (and a Domo kun DS lite sleeve)
The inside fabric was leftover from my wedding (my crafty maid of honor and I made all the flowers, they're still in my living room) There are 2 pen pockets and a larger pocket to hold a passport
there is also a bonus zipper pocket just for the hell of it, mostly for loose change and chapsticks
